The drama is adapted from Xuan-Yuan Sword, a series of role-playing video games developed by Taiwanese company Softstar Entertainment Inc.
During the reign of Emperor Yang Sui of the Sui Dynasty, a red star appears which lead the appearance of the 5 artifacts that can grant its wielder their wishes and also at the same time open a rift of the sky which is a way for the demon lord to gain his influence over the 3 realms, mortal, celestial, and demon. Yuwen Tuo, last prince of the fallen Northern Zhou dynasty, wielder of Xuan Yuan Sword, and Chen Jing Chou, last prince of the fallen Chen dynasty, both struggle to revive their fallen dynasty. In order to do so they must gather 5 sacred artifacts. Along the way they meet other people related to those artifacts, Taba Yu Er (a 2nd princess of taba tribe), Dugu Ningke (a princess of Sui Dynasty), Yu Xiao Xue(daughter of the goddess Nuwa), zhang lie (khan of taba tribe), etc. Having experiences life changing events together, most characters develop emotional feeling towards each other, love, hate, betrayal, misunderstanding, and acceptance. Later, they learn that those 5 artifacts are even have much greater purpose which is to save the world from demon realm and they must put aside their personal goal to use the artifacts to seal the rift of sky, destroy the demon lord and save the world.

I decided to watch this series (although none of my friends actually recommended it) because it's adapted from a RPG, I always love RPG genre on a game alhtough I haven't played this one. I actually glad I watched it, it has all those RPG essential, different type of characters with unique abilities, central quest which is the main story with few sub quests, different paths for each characters, and the last boss battle, lol, oh and of course friendship and love feeling all the way. The main lead is actually the most essential in any RPG and the most lovable, but somehow I didn't find it here, even if some main lead started as a whimp, most develop to be a worthy character during the quests but again I failed to find it here (maybe just me though). As I watched the series I grow more and more fond of Yuwen Tuo, both his character in the game and the cast, are just perfect. I also like the cast playing Nuwa's daughter Yu Xiao Xue, I think she really is a beauty though she surely needs to learn more about acting, this maybe her first series with important role and sadly despite her pretty face, her acting is lacking, I do wish she'll do much much better acting in her next work. Another thing that bugged me since earlier episodes is the special effects, I don't mind the fantasy creatures or realms, I just hope maybe one day with this kind of series when it comes to battle especially duel scene, they can use martial arts and only using any special effects when really necessary.
